Doosan Group Yonkang Foundation (Chairman Y.H. Park) held an award ceremony for the medical science category of the 2012 Yonkang Academic Awards at the Grand Ballroom of the 63 Building Convention Center in Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, on July 10. Professor Kyu-seok Kim (Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Emergency medicine) was awarded a plaque and US$ 17,376.

The prize-winning research paper, titled “Low-Dose Abdominal CT for Evaluating Suspected Appendicitis”, was published in the April issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The study demonstrated that a low dose of radiation of abnormal CT can generate the same level of accuracy in diagnosing appendicitis as that of a high dose.

The medical science category of the Yonkang Academic Awards was instituted in 2006 to stimulate young researchers and to make contributions to the development of medical science in Korea.
